We are loving the chill in the air as we head out to the Old Town Temecula Farmer’s Market to pick up our box of treats from the Inland Empire CSA. The Sage Mountain Farms booth not only has an amazing selection, but everything they offer is locally grown and certified organic. The market is so fun this time of year and a great place to pick up unique Christmas gifts made by the skilled artisan vendors, so we wander the booths for a bit and then head home to dig into our fruits and veggies.
We are always in a festive mood, but the holiday season gives us extra opportunities to celebrate. As such, Chef Andrea from Ava James Catering and I feel that a toast to your heath, happiness and a prosperous New Year is in order! Please enjoy a simple holiday cocktail using fruit found in our CSA box this week.
1 1/2 ounces of vodka
2 sprigs of basil
1 tsp sugar (if desired)
2 ounces pomegranate juice
Fresh herbs are hugely popular in the cocktail world these days and we are loving the opportunity to play around with the flavors from our garden. Add sprigs of basil and sugar to the bottom of the glass and muddle. I personally do not like sweet drinks, so I leave out the sugar and simply muddle the basil. Fill the glass with ice. Pour vodka over the ice, add desired amount of pomegranate juice and top with soda water. We made our own juice using the seeds from the fresh pomegranates in the CSA box. We simply pureed them in a food processor and strained out the seeds by pressing them through a sieve. If you choose to use a bottled juice, you will for sure want to use less or no sugar.
Further to the fancy glassware in the photo: I drink everything from a pint glass and could not resist the opportunity to give a shout out to our friends at Black Market Brewing Company. Their tasting room is now open, so make sure you swing on by for a flight, pint or growler of your own.
Cheers to you and yours this holiday season; may your days be merry and bright!
