The celebration of the New Year is actually the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. Then around 2000 BC Babylonians celebrated the beginning of a new year on what is now March 23, although they actually had no written calendar. The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions at the beginning of the year is also an ancient practice. It goes back to 153 B.C. when Janus, a mythical king of Rome, was placed at the head of the calendar. Janus had two faces, so he could look back on the past and forward to the future.
So here it is 2012. We are still looking back with reflection and forward to what we hope will be a year when we will reach our goals. I asked our writers and photographers to take a moment to share what their own resolutions are for 2012. It seems that more than a few center around eating healthier and getting more exercise. Ahhh the “hazards” of working for ToT!
(1) Love more deeply, (2) Live more wisely, and (3) Laugh more abundantly! And to play the Glad Game more because lest we forget, being HAPPY is a choice… I loved Disney movie Pollyanna, where she said she got crutches as a gift once instead of the doll she wanted and she chose to be happy about it by thinking she was glad she didn’t need them! – MikePensit, Writer
Eat less, exercise more. – Amanda Schwarzer, Writer/Photographer
I hope to 1) organize my home office so that it’s not embarrassing to show people 2) finish a blanket I started making 6 years ago 3) send out some kind of Happy New Year’s card to family and friends – Johanna Lack, Editor & Writer (and fill-in photographer when needed)
(1) To continue helping the children in the community through my work with Wishes for Children, (2) To share the joy and beauty in this world through my photography, (3) To actually get paid for work, (4) To continue to go after those that owe me money. – Kat Ellis, Photographer
My new year’s resolution is to make the effort to become a new and better me. – Amanda Bussen, Writer/Photographer
My new year’s resolution is to do P90X in 89 days. – Sara Hastings, Writer
I’m going to get my ToT articles in sooner. – Jeff Gardner, Writer
I want to work out more often. – Dana Campbell, Writer
My new year’s resolution is to live in the present day, have a positive attitude, and worry less about things I cannot change. – The Roving Wino, Writer & ToT Cooking Expert
All worthwhile goals but let me end with saying if we don’t do everything we set out to do, that’s just fine!

Readers, do YOU have a new year’s resolution to share? If so, let’s hear them!
