A gorgeous private estate surrounded by the Francois Roux Vineyard in Temecula Wine Country was the setting for the first installment of Taste of Temecula’s Sushi ‘n Sake Class with a great after party. Participants were treated to a first-rate sushi-making class supplemented by delicious sake and other beverages, and concluded with a delectable all-you-can-eat sushi buffet that when laid out looked more like art deco masterpiece. Truthfully could have been a painting i would be proud to hang on my wall. The best part of the class said Taste of Temecula’s Ian Blafer was that everyone had a hand in makung the freshly made sushi and made for great group bonding and fun conversation.

Participant Kimberly explained to me that sushi refers to “rice and stuff,” and may consist of vegetables as well as seafood. Under the first rate tutelage and fun narration of sushi chef Charles McKee, participants engaged in every step of the sushi-making process, including the cutting of vegetables, the boiling and skewering of shrimp and, best of all, dining on their finished creations. It was not only a great time but this is also a great way to entertain friends by hosting a sushi party of your own. Take a few classes and you’ll be ready to do just that!
Many of the participants had never made sushi before, and enjoyed acquiring some new gourmet skills. Participant Pat, a self-described “mid-western cook,” had never tasted sushi, and savored a new-found delicacy. Participant Dyan was a newcomer to the area, and told me she is considering relocating to the beautiful Temecula Valley. (That must have been a great sushi class for her to relocate!)
Everyone left well fed and happy with a handout sushi recipe enabling them to continue refining their new sushi-making skills at home. One class member, Elaine, ended up with a plate of sushi and told me later that being the birthday girl, she decided gift it to the staff at Keyways Winery. She said that crew went crazy over the huge plate as she explained the event and many asked about tickets. This was a truly memorable Sunday afternoon for all.
